Facilities provided to US serve a humanitarian cause, there is no security issue for Cyprus, source tells CNA

The Cyprus government does not consider that its positive response to the United States request to temporarily station a rapid response unit in Cyprus, with the mission to evacuate personnel working in US diplomatic missions in the region, as well as US citizens, if needed, creates any problems as regards the country’s security, a source has told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA).

The same source stressed that the US request did not in any case have to do with using Cyprus for launching military operations. The request that was submitted, as a precautionary measure, clearly has to do with a humanitarian operation and this is why Cyprus’ response was positive, in the framework of our long-standing policy, the source added.
