US deploys rapid response unit in Cyprus to evacuate diplomats and civilians if need arises

Nicosia gave its consent to a request by the United States, to temporarily station a rapid response unit in Cyprus, with a mission is to evacuate personnel working in US diplomatic missions in the region, as well as US citizens, if the need arises.
 
According to a written statement by Government Spokesman Kyriacos Koushos, the Republic of Cyprus granted a request, submitted by US authorities through the US Embassy in Nicosia, in the framework of its longstanding policy to deal favorably with requests exclusively pertaining to humanitarian operations.
 
It is added that the government gave its consent for the temporary stationing of a rapid response unit, with a mission to evacuate US diplomatic personnel and US citizens, if the need arises.
