ECHR rejects Russian prisoner’s application for his release from Cyprus prison due to coronavirus pandemic

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has rejected an application for issuing an interim release order of a foreign detainee from the prisons of Cyprus.

The prisoner, a Russian national who is detained pending his extradition to Russia since September 9, 2019, had alleged that his life and health were in danger due to the transmission of the coronavirus in the central prison of Cyprus in Nicosia.

In its judgement, on May 4, the ECHR ruled that even in view of the pandemic, the release of the detainee is not justified and accepted the level of protection and measures taken by the prison administration, as well as the general detention conditions in the prisons of Cyprus.
