A number of UK Cypriots have highlighted the importance of Hagia Sophia to the Christian Orthodox faith in letters to Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, the head of the Church of England the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Catholic Archbishop of Westminster.
The 20 UK Cypriots signing the letters underline their “considerable uneasiness” at the move by President Erdogan to turn Hagia Sophia into a mosque.
They recount the history of the building, noting that its interior remains a treasure house of Christian and Islamic decoration.
