Pandemic should not stand in the way of the peace process for Cyprus, Chinese Ambassador says

The coronavirus pandemic should not stand in the way of the peace process for Cyprus, the Ambassador of China to the island, Huang Xingyuan, has said.

Xingyuan said in a post on Twitter that he had on Tuesday a good phone call with the UN Special Representative in Cyprus, Elizabeth Spehar.

"A good phone call today with Ms. Elizabeth Spehar re: UNFICYP & Cyprus Problem. China firmly supports UN`s role in resolving the Cyprus Problem. We agreed that now is the time for parties to enhance mutual confidence. The pandemic should not stand in the way of the peace process, " Huang noted.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.
