UNSG's Special Representative expected to hold online discussions with the leaders on UNSG's report for UNFICYP

The UN Secretary General’s Special Representative in Cyprus and Head of the UN peacekeeping force on the island (UNFICYP), Elizabeth Spehar, is expected to have in early July separate online discussions with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, in view of the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ report for the renewal of UNFICYP’s mandate.

The Cyprus News Agency has learned that the report is expected to be circulated on July 10 and Spehar’s discussions with Anastasiades and Akinci are expected to take place between July 5-10. It is common practice for the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative to hold separate meetings with the two leaders prior to the circulation of a UNSG’s report on Cyprus, however this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she is expected to discuss with them online, a source told CNA.
