Εuropean Commission welcomes the departure of 'Yavuz' from Cyprus' EEZ and hopes to see similar moves

The European Commission welcomes the departure of the Turkish drill ship "Yavuz" from the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of Cyprus, and hopes to see similar and further moves from Turkey, Peter Stano, a spokesman of the European Commission and the European External Action Service told CNA.

More specifically asked by CNA during the daily midday briefing, in Brussels, Peter Stano stated the following: "yes, very briefly I can say that the departure of the Yavuz vessel constitutes another welcome step towards de-escalation in the Eastern Mediterranean and we hope to see similar and further moves in this direction, as it was outlined and discussed by the leaders at the (European) Council last week".

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third.
